Numerical simulation and PIV measurements of the wave-induced flow field near semi-circular breakwaters

Abstract Careful design of the high-tech semi-circular breakwaters (SBW), which are used for protection against sea waves, is essential to avoid failure these large-scale projects. An improved tool adopting numerical simulations, complemented with experimental measurements introduced. Unstructured boundary-fitted grids model curved SBW boundary accurately and resolve flow adjacent it. Experimental based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) introduced numerically simulated velocity fields validated. For first time, strong free surface deformation upstream SBW, termed trough-breaking, reproduced numerically. The phenomenon investigated in detail its impact several advantages stability emphasized. accuracy due unstructured by PIV data set, offers valuable prospects performing complex designs exploring future applications. Article Highlights efficient breakwater simulations measurements. results agree well Hence, this set should be extensively validation studies. important “trough-breaking” features clarified.
